How To Repair Plaster Walls Holes

Here are the steps to patching up holes in plaster walls. If you have removed any plaster, or dug out a crack for repair, then you can see the positions of the lath.

For small holes less than 5 or so across, first clean the hole of any loose materials and wet down the exposed plaster with a water from a spray bottle to improve adhesion on the next steps. Use a cold chisel and and ball pein hammer to chip away the damaged plaster and us a scraper to scrape away excess debris. Cut fiberglass mesh and press it into the top of the plaster. Fill holes half full and press the plaster as deep into the hole as possible.

Poking holes in plaster walls can leave bare lath flapping and loosens the plaster surrounding the opening. Cut off any dangling pieces of plaster. Use painters tape to hold the drop cloths in place.

Let the patch dry and apply a coat of finishing plaster. Clean and tidy the plaster or plasterboard around the hole, then spray a little water on the plaster and allow it to absorb. If it is an extremely large hole, you can apply the patch in several layers that are less than 1/2 inch thick.

Repeat the spackling if necessary. In this way we can easily remove any gypsum or joint splashes. Do this with both battens and then cut a square of plasterboard to fit in the hole.

Usually, the best time to repair a plaster wall is just before youre ready to repaint it. Smear a modest amount of paste firmly over the hole. How to repair those nail holes.
